Why The Element of Laughter is best pony

A friend asked me a bit about My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and Pinkie Pie, and so this was my explanation of The Element of Laughter:

MLP is a show targeted at little girls, but it really has depth and the show really is a classic in my opinion. For me it took a bit of watching initially to see what the hype was about, and it did grow on me more and more, but the more I watch it the more I see just what an awesome show it is. It has very original characters, despite them being based on stereotypes they do have depth and individuality, the show manages to be profound without taking itself too seriously, it is amazingly pro-feminist in a very uplifting and natural way, showing what a true appreciation of women is, in my opinion, and I really love the relationships between the characters and their genuine love for each other. The artwork is beautiful and I absolutely love the music, it is really professional and amazing. Overall I find the show very natural, remarkably character-driven and unforced in terms of plot and emotion. There are also a lot of deeper messages (and easter eggs like the many movie references) which you notice when you re-watch the series. I love watching it when I am down. MLP actually helped me get out of a a real depressive slump and restored a lot of my hope in humanity as well.

Pinkie Pie is a very random and fun character, she is outside of the box and really breaks the fourth wall in the series, she is often underestimated (and yet loved) by the other characters, and yet her own unique quirkiness is often exactly what they need to solve a difficult problem. Her randomness and silliness often turns out to be just our misinterpretation of a profoundly intellectual and discerning character who does not necessarily know how to bring other people to her seemingly chaotic way of thinking. To me she is very inspiring, and stands out amoung all the other characters for her uniqueness, her courageous ability to be who she is even though she is frequently misunderstood, and her determination to bring cheerfulness and laughter to everypony she meets regardless of how they may disregard her or think her silly.

She is fully extroverted and fun, she is a clown and yet she is often several steps ahead of the others (and the audience) and the fandom realise this (there are many Pinkie Pie breaking the fourth wall and transcending logic jokes). All of the ponies represent an element of harmony, which becomes incredibly important when they have to battle evil enemies and save Equestria when it is under threat. The elements they represent are incredibly important. Pinkie Pie represents laughter, an incredibly important element in our lives. Like laughter, she is often wrongly perceived as unnecessary and unimportant in the grander scheme of life and getting things done, but her unpredictable and sudden appearances and the incomparability of her character are a constant reminder of just how important her role both in her world of Ponyville/Equestria and as an element of laughter and ultimately joy in our own lives actually is.

Life would be greyscaled without Pinkie Pie. She is the element of laughter, but her character itself represents the ability to think outside the box (maybe inside the chimney instead?) and (to me) the much more out-of-the-box realisation that out-of-the-box creativity and expressing your individuality (and the resultant joy that too brings) really is the key to unlocking your own potential and the intelligence that other people often do not understand.

Pinkie Pie is quite likely a hidden genius (all of the ponies in Ponyville appear to be very smart, the young ponies study university-level maths at school.)

Many geniuses (such as Einstein) were misunderstood or failed school or dropped out of university before they were able to show the world their amazing discoveries.

As Einstein said “Everybody is a genius, but if you measure a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live the rest of its life believing that it is an idiot.”

Pinkie Pie to me is a realisation of all of these things, as well as hope, joy, a sense of purpose and achievement beyond society’s perceived limitations: the reasons life to me that life is truly worth living and worth hoping for.

The show in general represents an idea that you can be who you are, a unique individual, and no matter who you are there is a place for you in this world so long as you believe in yourself and go for your dream.

Pinkie Pie is who I see myself as being in an ideal world in many ways: the epitome of who I could be given the formula of who I am and whom I long to be, and whom I can become if I replace the fears in my life with laughter.

You don’t have to be understood by the world to realise that you and your individuality are their own incredible work of art (like the character of Pinkie Pie is on so many  levels:) ).

She is positivity, she is the outworking of potential: she is kinetic energy, she is dynamic, she is multidimensional. She is truly powerful and she IS the force of positive energy the world. She is the power to change the world.

Pinkie Pie represents the revelation that embracing the amazing gift of your own individuality and celebrating life for all that it is, facing our fears with confidence, being able to laugh and be undaunted by a challenge and to bring joy to others truly are the greatest and most inspiring means to live our lives.

Never underestimate the power of the element of laughter! :)
